Several disgruntled fans of Velez Mostar set fire to a referee's car on Tuesday, waiting for him in a tunnel after a match against Borac Banja Luka, in the Bosnian football championship, the police announced.
After that match played in Mostar (south), interrupted a few minutes before the end after the incursion on the field by several tens of Velez fans, referee Sabrija Topalovic and his two assistants started the journey back to Sarajevo.
His vehicle was intercepted in a tunnel by another car carrying four people, a police official told AFP.
"After damaging the car, they set it on fire. One injured person was hospitalized in Jablanica," explained the officer, adding that the perpetrators were being sought.
The car was completely burned, according to a photo released in the local press.
Velez fans descended onto the field in the 82nd minute of the match, after a second goal that secured a 2-0 victory for Borac, the current champion, and after protesting several referee decisions.
These types of incidents are rare in the Bosnian championship, although referees are sometimes accused of corruption.
In late 2020, two referees and a member of a second division arbitration commission were charged with corruption in matches in exchange for payments ranging from 1,500 to 3,500 euros ($1,760 to $4,100) per match. AFP
