Quito -

Outstanding progression by Ben O’Connor who won stage 17 of the Giro d'Italia, after the escape and attempt to win in the previous stage, where he had to settle for second place.

The Australian from NTT Pro Cycling was part of the escape and this time he made sure that the effort paid off by reaching the finish line in Madonna Di Campiglio alone with a time of 5 hours 50 minutes 59 seconds for the 203 kilometers route.

One day less for the defense of the maglia rosa by Joao Almeida, who with Deceuninck was able to control the peloton for another day and maintain the gap with his Sunweb contenders: Wilco Kelderman, 17 seconds behind, and Jai Hindley, 2 min 58 s behind, second and third in the general classification, respectively.

The escape of 20 riders brought color to this stage. The group added minutes of difference with the leaders' pack, before selecting the strongest to face the final stretch, which favored O'Connor.

In the stage, Ecuadorian Jonathan Caicedo (EF) finished in 68th place, who together with Argentine Eduardo Sepúlveda (67) from Movistar Team were the highest placed Latin Americans. Alexander Cepeda (Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec) finished in 123rd place. (D)
