FIFA President Infantino Cleared of Wrongdoing by Ethics Committee

Infantino was facing a criminal process initiated by a special federal prosecutor in Switzerland regarding certain meetings he held in 2016 and 2017, as President of FIFA, with the Swiss Attorney General Michael Lauber, the same facts examined by the Ethics Committee.

The Committee - explains in a statement - "has decided to close the claim and close the case due to the obvious absence of a prima facie case in relation to the alleged violation of the FIFA Code of Ethics."

"According to the information available to date, no aspect of the conduct analyzed constitutes a violation of FIFA regulations or incurs in the provisions of the Code of Ethics, nor does it justify the adoption of any measure, including a temporary suspension," the resolution indicates.

Infantino took office as FIFA President in 2016 and was reelected three years later.

On August 7th, Infantino addressed the member federation presidents through a letter in which he emphasized his willingness to cooperate "unreservedly" with justice, following the criminal process initiated by a special federal prosecutor in Switzerland.

In the text, which was accessed by EFE, Infantino expressed his desire to explain "clearly and precisely" the situation that led a special federal prosecutor in Switzerland to initiate a criminal process regarding certain meetings he held, as President of FIFA, with the Swiss Attorney General Michael Lauber.

Infantino explained in the letter that he is "available to Swiss authorities to answer any questions they may have". "As I have always done, I will cooperate unreservedly with the investigation. In fact, I hope to have the opportunity to answer any questions related to this matter, because plain and simple: we have nothing to hide".
