Peruvian Soccer Player Paolo Guerrero Suffers Serious Knee Injury
The medical department of the Porto Alegre team reported that the Peruvian player suffered a serious injury to his right knee during the match played at the Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro and announced that he will undergo surgery "in the coming days".
They added that it is very likely that Guerrero will be "out for the remainder of the season" in Brazil, which is scheduled to end in February of next year.
"Injury to the cruciate ligament of the right knee. Out for the remainder of the season. Will undergo surgery in the coming days," the club pointed out in its medical bulletin after the examinations were performed.
On social media, Internacional asked for the "support" of the fans in this "difficult moment".
"Our number 9 shirt is going to need our double support in this difficult moment. He is brave and will come out even stronger! Strength, Guerrero! The red and white fans are with you," they posted.
According to local sports media, the striker's recovery time, at the age of 36, is estimated at between 6 and 8 months.
Guerrero injured himself yesterday during a ball dispute in the second half of the match against Fluminense at the legendary Maracanã, which marked Internacional's first defeat in the Brazilian League.
The Peruvian forward has stood out as a protagonist in recent matches with his club and is currently the top scorer in the Brazilian Championship, with three goals in three matches played.
It was the striker who scored the first and only goal of the Colorado team in the match against Fluminense, but he had to be replaced after the collision and leave the field on a stretcher.
A key figure in the Colorado attack, Guerrero is also the top scorer of the season for Internacional, with 10 goals in 15 matches played throughout 2020.
