The Minister of Public Health of Ecuador plans to resume professional football tournaments on July 25

The Minister of Public Health of Ecuador, Juan Carlos Zevallos, announced that he will propose to the National Emergency Operations Committee (COE-N) to authorize the resumption of the Professional Football League (LigaPro) tournaments on July 25 "in honor of Guayaquil," which will celebrate its 485th founding anniversary that day.

"I will propose that on July 25, the Ecuadorian championship be resumed in honor of Guayaquil, with all the necessary safety measures, advocating that society contains the COVID-19 virus," Zevallos declared this Thursday in an interview with Radio Huancavilca.

Currently, LigaPro aims to resume the competition on July 17, awaiting approval of the protocols by the COE. The documentation was presented last Monday, as reported by Miguel Ángel Loor, president of the football entity.

  • LigaPro will allow 224 people per stadium when the competition resumes

The minister added that the port city has suffered greatly from the health crisis caused by the new coronavirus, and the return of soccer for its patron saint festivities would be a "tribute."

"The impact that Guayaquil had, we have not seen it in any other part of the country," Zevallos said, denying that the public could enter the stadiums "at this time."

The national football championship has been suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic since March 14, when the last matches were played. In the A series, only two out of six games of matchday 5 were played. (D)
