The Copa América regulations for the 2015 tournament have been altered compared to previous editions and as of the start of the quarter-finals on Wednesday extra time will not be played in the event of a draw. In that case, the outcome of the match will be decided straight away by a penalty shoot-out. No time to change things around in extra time, no chance to take advantage of a tiring opponent. Straight to sudden death.
The decision has caused quite a bit of controversy and the teams are starting to adapt to the new rules. Several of the quarter-finalists have decided to dedicate plenty of time to practicing penalties, as the chances of having to take one in competition have increased considerably. In Argentina in 2011, several matches were decided on penalties, but always after 30 minutes of extra time. Argentina-Uruguay was decided on a shoot-out, with the hosts going out. So was Brazil-Paraguay, which ended with the Canarinho being knocked out. At the 2015 tournament, there could be plenty of the same.
