Gustavo Alfaro said goodbye to Boca Juniors on Monday, as his contract will not be renewed by the new executives, with a letter in which he stated to have experienced "ambiguous feelings" during his year as coach of the Xeneize.

Alfaro bids farewell to Boca Juniors

In the letter he sent to local media, the coach, who took charge in January, thanked the club's employees, directors, sports director Nicolás Burdisso, and players for "their commitment", their "dedication", and their "desire to constantly improve".

"It is not easy for me to write this farewell letter, after a fast-paced year that leaves me with mixed feelings," said Alfaro.

"On the one hand, the feeling of having been left halfway through a process, and on the other hand, the immense gratitude for being able to work in a unique and different club," he explained.

With Alfaro in the dugout, Boca Juniors became champions of the 2018 Argentine Super Cup by defeating Rosario Central on penalties, and were runners-up in the Argentine Super League Cup, losing in the final to Tigre, who had been relegated to the Second Division.

In August, Almagro, also from the Second Division, defeated them in the round of sixteen of the Copa Argentina.

In addition, River Plate eliminated them in the semifinals of the Copa Libertadores.

"I will take many memories and sensations with me, some of them painful for not being able to give the fans their seventh (Libertadores title)," said Alfaro.

In the Argentine Super League, Boca Juniors are in second place with 29 points, one behind leaders Argentinos Juniors, with seven rounds remaining in the tournament.

For the coach, there are "no doubts" that the players will become champions of the domestic league.

"In every part of the country you go, in every corner of the world you find yourself, there will always be a Boca fan who doesn't care about the sleepless nights for a photo or an autograph from their idols. That is Boca. Passion," he stated.

The top candidate to replace Alfaro is Miguel Ángel Russo, who previously managed Xeneize in 2007 and won the Copa Libertadores that year.
