Peruvian National Team
The Peruvian national team won its first Copa America on this day 80 years ago. On February 12, 1939, the team would win the then-called South American Championship of National Teams.
The tournament was played in Peru and only 5 teams participated (Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Ecuador, and Peru). It was played in a round-robin format and the 'Blanquirroja' would win the title, after winning all four matches, with a goal difference of 13 goals in favor and 4 against.
The top scorer of that Copa America would be none other than Teodoro 'Lolo' Fernandez with 7 goals.

The Peruvian national team would not win another Copa America title until 1975, when Téófilo Cubillas, Héctor Chumpitaz, Hugo Sotil, and company appeared. They defeated Colombia in the final on that occasion.
New era
The Peruvian national team is preparing for the 2019 Copa America in Brazil. The team will be in a group with Brazil, Venezuela, and Bolivia.
