Manchester City won on penalties (5-4, 1-1 at the end of the 90 minutes) against Liverpool and conquered the Community Shield, the traditional tournament that opens the season in England, this Sunday at Wembley.
The current Premier League champion took the lead with a goal from Raheem Sterling in the first half (12th minute) and Cameroon's Joel Matip forced penalties for Liverpool in the second half (77th minute).
From the penalty spot, Dutchman Georginio Wijnaldum was the only one of the 10 shooters to miss his shot, well saved by Chilean goalkeeper Claudio Bravo, giving the trophy to the 'citizens'.
Thus, Pep Guardiola has just won his 28th title of his professional career: Barcelona (14 titles), Bayern Munich (7 titles), and Manchester City (7 titles).
Liverpool vs. Manchester City clash this Sunday, August 4th, for the first title in England, the Community Shield 2019. LIVE | DIRECT | ONLINE | The match is at 9:00 in the morning (Peruvian time) at the legendary Wembley. Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola will face each other, two of the coaches who mark the evolution of modern football.
This will be a special match, especially because of the exchange of statements by the coaches. Klopp's accusation of Manchester City being a team made with a checkbook had a strong response from Guardiola. He recalled the investment of over 200 million by his rival, to return glory to the 'reds' with their brilliant victory in the last edition of the Champions League. In the Community Shield, Liverpool appears as runner-up of the 'Premier League', as it was Guardiola's City that dominated with a domestic treble in England. The goal of the 'Champions League' contest will be faced with a team that has barely been modified with a single major investment, made by the Spaniard Rodri to Atletico Madrid (70 million euros). Liverpool has even less reinforcement, having only spent 2 million euros on a 17-year-old young central defender, Van den Berge, from PEC Zwolle. This will be the first ever clash between Liverpool and Manchester City in the history of the Community Shield, with Manchester City playing with a commemorative retro shirt for their 125th anniversary. Guardiola will not have goalkeeper Ederson and midfielder Fernandinho, who had a shorter preparation after winning the Copa America with Brazil. Klopp will lose Senegalese forward Sadio Mané after his brilliant Africa Cup of Nations and will not be able to line up his luxury trio. (EFE)
