The phrase "football gives you second chances" never fit better than now with the Peruvian National Team in the 2019 Copa America. Ricardo Gareca's team barely qualified for the quarterfinals and is now one step away from lifting the trophy as the best in the continent. But to do that, they must overcome a hurdle: the host Brazil and the wall they have with Alisson Becker in goal.
The current Liverpool goalkeeper is having an outstanding performance with the Canarinha and is about to break Claudio Taffarel's record. Something that the Peruvian team must prevent in their attempt to touch the sky with their hands.
If we only talk about the continental tournament, Alisson Becker has played five matches and has not conceded any goals. And if he remains unbeaten against Peru and wins the title, he would achieve what Taffarel himself accomplished in the 1989 Copa America: 6 matches without conceding any goals and the continental title.
But if we expand the statistics outside the Copa America, we can see that Alisson has gone 7 consecutive matches without conceding any goals playing for the Brazilian national team. The last goal he conceded was in March of this year when David Pavlienka scored from outside the area at the 37th minute of the first half. It was the last time and since then he has been impassable.
Salomón Rondón, Marcelo Martins, Paolo Guerrero, Almirón, and Lionel Messi are some of the names that have faced Alisson and failed to score against him. But the Peruvian team will play for revenge, the one they have had since the 5-0 defeat in the group stage and now comes, just in the final for the title of champion of America.
