The Chilean National Team usually calls itself the 'two-time champion of America' after winning the Copa America Chile 2015 and the Copa America Centenario 2016. However, the Conmebol has announced that the term 'two-time champion' does not apply to the 'Roja'.
The Chilean newspaper 'El Mercurio', one of the most important in the southern country, made the query to Conmebol and received a strong and unexpected response.
"The Centenario Cup was unique and Chile kept the original in its showcases, not like the Copa America of always, where each winner receives a replica. That does not mean that Chile is not the two-time champion of the continent, as they won two consecutive titles, but not the same trophy," said Conmebol to the aforementioned Chilean media.
In fact, 'El Mercurio' made a similar query to Conmebol a few days ago, regarding the reason why only one Copa America title appears on the Chilean jersey, and the response it received was similar.
"This Copa America is the normal one and the one played in 2016 was commemorative, that is why Chile will only carry the title won in 2015, which is the tournament that corresponds to the normal line of events organized every four years," said the confederation.
What does that mean? That Chile has won two tournaments organized by Conmebol and therefore is two-time champion of America, but has not won two Copa America titles, which is a tournament that has a regular course. The Copa America Centenario held in 2016 in the United States was an extraordinary or commemorative event.
For that reason, only the name of Chile appears once on the original Copa America trophy, for the one they won in 2015.
