Despite the fact that the Peruvian National Team lost its first two matches in Russia 2018, according to Spanish journalist Mister Chip, it will still maintain the 11th position in the FIFA Ranking until the start of the Round of 16. But, how is this calculation made?
First of all, it is necessary to take into account the points from the last four years period. To know how many points a team will receive for each match, the calculation is as follows:
These are the factors to consider:
- Victory or draw? (M = match)
- Was it an important match (from a friendly to a FIFA World Cup match)? (I = importance)
- What was the strength of the opponents in terms of their position in the ranking and the confederation they belong to? (T = table and C = confederation)
While the equation is as follows:
P = M x I x T x C
M ranges from zero to 3. In case of victory, the maximum value is given, 1 for a draw, and zero for a defeat. For penalty shootouts, 2 is given to the winner and 1 to the loser.
T measures the strength of the opponents. The formula is: 200 - the FIFA Ranking position of the opposing team. The governing body of football explains that as an exception, the team in the first place is always assigned the value of 200, and for teams ranked 150th, the minimum value is 50.
The value of I (match importance) is crucial to increase the result of the equation. The matches of Russia 2018 have a value of 4.0, while a friendly match is worth 1.0, a World Cup qualifier is worth 2.5, and a final competition of a confederation or Confederations Cup is worth 3.0.
Finally, C corresponds to the strength of the confederation, with CONMEBOL being the highest ranked:
- CONMEBOL 1.00
- UEFA 0.99
- CONCACAF/AFC/CAF/OFC 0.85
