Following the departure of Eric Hosmer, the Royals are signed free agent first baseman Lucas Duda, Kansas City announced on Wednesday.

The deal is worth a reported $3.5 million.

Duda, 32, hit 30 home runs in 2017, with the Rays acquiring him from the Mets ahead of the trade deadline. He had spent his entire career with the Mets to that point, hitting 30 home runs in 2014 and 27 in 2015.

Kansas City had Hunter Dozier – the club's 2013 first-round pick – penciled in at first base after Hosmer signed with the Padres.
