50th Anniversary of the Mexico 68 Olympic Games

On the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Mexico 68 Olympic Games, the Mexican Olympic Committee and the Sport Institute of Mexico City will celebrate the occasion with a series of activities starting in January.

Jimena Saldaña, first vice-president of the Mexican Olympic Committee (COM), pointed out that the idea is to have events, both sports and cultural, that commemorate each of the moments that were experienced in the summer games of 1968.

She indicated that the Olympics had a 180-degree turn in organization, since there were episodes that marked history, such as having the first woman to light the Olympic Flame.

"Mexico can proudly say that the 68 Olympic Games were a turning point in Olympic history, never before had there been a cultural program that went hand in hand with sports," she recalled.

The Mexican capital will replicate iconic activities throughout the year, such as the Ceremony of the New Fire, a dance festival, a light festival, a film exhibition, the Route of Friendship, a children's contest, and a gastronomic festival, among others.

Along with Saldaña, Horacio de la Vega, director of the Sport Institute of Mexico City, will be responsible for leading the celebrations in 2018.
