The Peruvian Raúl Pacheco won the silver medal in the marathon at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games.

The Cuban Richer Pérez was the winner with a time of 2h17'04". Only nine seconds later, Raúl Pacheco arrived.

The fight between both of them was tough from kilometer 30. They went neck to neck distancing themselves from the other competitors, but in the final meters, the Cuban pulled away with a wide lead thanks to his speed.

The other Peruvian, Raúl Machacuay, finished in tenth place with a time of 2h24'29".

The silver medal is historic for Peru, as we had never won a medal in the marathon at the Pan American Games before.

PREVIEW

The Peruvian long-distance runners Raúl Pacheco and Raúl Machacuay will participate in the Men's Marathon (6:00 a.m. / Latina) at the Toronto 2015 Pan American Games. Our compatriots will try to win the gold medal and break the records set by Kenyan Dennis Kimetto (2:02:57 / 2014) and Puerto Rican Jorge González (2:12:43 / 1983).

Raúl Pacheco, 36 years old, is the main national contender in the Men's Marathon at the Toronto Pan American Games. The long-distance runner knows what it takes to break records after setting the national marathon record in Rotterdam 2015, which qualified him for the Rio 2016 Olympics.

Raúl Pacheco comes to this event with three previous competitions: 10000m at the South American Athletics Championships (2013), marathon at the Guadalajara Pan American Games (2011), and marathon at the London Olympics (2012).

On the other hand, Raúl Machacuay will also seek to reach the podium in the competition. As a reminder, the long-distance runner finished first in the half marathon at the Toronto Waterfront Marathon (2014).

Alongside Raúl Pacheco and Raúl Machacuay, 17 other long-distance runners will participate, including Cuban Richer Perez, Mexican Alejandro Suárez, Chilean Roberto Echeverria, Brazilian Franck de Almeida, among others.
