Hamilton Breaks Record with 69 Pole Positions
The qualifying session was disrupted by rain, which forced a two and a half hour delay, creating suspense at times. However, in the end, Lewis Hamilton made history on Saturday by becoming the driver with the most first-place starts in the Italian Grand Prix.
With 69 pole positions, he surpassed the legendary Michael Schumacher's record at the Autodromo Internazionale Monza. However, the qualifying had to be suspended during Q1 due to an accident involving Frenchman Romain Grosjean.
Since then, the race management delayed the resumption of activities. The rain stopped, but with the track too wet, there was no certainty of when racing would resume. After more than two hours, the cars returned to action, but the rain reappeared in Q3.
The only one who came out unscathed was Hamilton. Behind him were the Red Bull drivers, who under normal conditions were not expected to be competitive. However, despite the efforts of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo, both of whom have penalties for parts changes that will send them to the back of the grid.
This gives Canadian Lance Stroll and Frenchman Esteban Ocon their best starting positions, second and third respectively. Behind them are the Finns Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Räikkönen, along with German Sebastian Vettel, Brazilian Felipe Massa, Belgian Stoffel Vandoorne, and Mexican Sergio Pérez, who will start from ninth place.
