The Cleveland Cavaliers formalized the arrival of former leader of the Chicago Bulls and the New York Knicks, point guard Derrick Rose, who will reinforce the team for the 2017-18 season.

"We are very excited to add a player of Derrick Rose's caliber to our team," said the new general manager Koby Altman.

"Derrick could have joined other teams but his goal is to win; we are confident that he will fit in perfectly with our team and lead us to victory in many ways," he added.

The Cavs, NBA champions in 2016, did not disclose the amount of the contract, but according to the US press, it will be for one year and $2.1 million.

Last season, "D-Rose" earned a salary of $21.3 million.

Rose joined the Knicks a year ago after seven seasons in Chicago as part of a trade.

With the Knicks, he played 64 games averaging 18 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game.

"My ambition is simple: to play to win. Playing on a team with the same ambition and with a coaching staff that can win the league title is all that matters to me," insisted Rose.

Since becoming the youngest player in history to win the NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in 2011, he has been plagued by injuries, two in the knee, and still seeks his first major title.

The Cavaliers have played in the last three NBA Finals and won the title in 2016, but were dominated in this season's final by the Golden State Warriors (4-1).

Rose could fill the starting point guard position that would be left open by Irving if he decides to go ahead with his plans to switch to another team.
