During an event held at the Madison Square Garden in New York, the Phenomenal faced off against Kevin Owens in a match for the United States Championship. Although it rarely happens that the title changes hands in non-televised events, AJ Styles surprised everyone by defeating KO and becoming the champion of the American union.

This is Styles' second title in WWE, after having won the company's championship last year.

AJ Styles earned the opportunity to fight for the belt at Battleground, but he faced Owens before in the event held in New York, and now he could arrive as the champion instead of the challenger.
