Peruvian sports is in mourning after it was announced that former Peruvian volleyball player Gabriela Cárdenas passed away at the age of 64 on Wednesday, October 5. Known among her teammates and fans as 'Gaby', she was part of the national women's team that won the silver medal at the 1982 Peru World Cup.

This world championship took place between September 12 and 25, 1982, and was held in various venues such as the Coliseo Amauta in Lima, the Coliseo Gran Chimú in Trujillo, and the Coliseo Cerrado in Chiclayo.
In that tournament, Peru finished first in Group A, surpassing Canada, Indonesia, and Nigeria. In the semifinals, they defeated the United States 3-0, only to lose to China in the final.
Cárdenas was also a member of the team that won the silver medal at the 1975 Mexico City Pan American Games and participated in the 1976 Montreal and 1980 Moscow Olympics.
Natalia Málaga, one of her former teammates, took to social media to say goodbye. "Gaby Cárdenas, you will remain in my memories, friend. Time didn't give us the chance to say goodbye, but I know you will be fine leaving behind many memories of championships, tours around the world," she began.
"Roommate on many trips we shared with that wonderful team, you leave our hearts sad and broken just as when we lost a match. I regret your departure. Thank you for your friendship. I found this photo next to you," she concluded.
