Ruschel had suffered spinal problems after the plane crash in Medellín. These ailments were expected to have a devastating impact: it was feared that the player wouldn't be able to play again and even that he wouldn't be able to walk again.
However, the defender recovered much faster than anticipated and was able to walk in the first medical report.
Alan Ruschel was one of the six survivors of the accident that occurred on flight 2933 of LaMia airline, where 71 people, including players, coaching staff, journalists, and crew members, lost their lives on the night of November 29, 2016.
