The City of Rome to honor Claudio Ranieri for his achievement with Leicester City
The City of Rome announced today that it has invited Italian coach Claudio Ranieri to the Capitol to reward him for "writing history" with English club Leicester City, after winning the league title last season.
The mayor of the Italian capital, Virginia Raggi, will present the award to Ranieri, who was born in Rome, for his incredible feat in the past season, when he won the English championship with a team that had narrowly avoided relegation the previous year.
The announcement, made in a press release by the sports councilor, Daniele Frongia, comes after the Italian coach was unexpectedly dismissed from his position last Thursday.
Despite the poor results this season, Leicester's management had initially announced in February that Ranieri had their full support, before changing their minds and firing him.
"We have invited Claudio Ranieri to the Capitol to honor him, on behalf of Mayor Raggi and the Administration of Rome, for the sensational work he did at the helm of Leicester City, culminating in the historic conquest of the Premier League," announced Frongia.
In the statement, the councilor also highlights that Ranieri "filled English and Italian fans around the world with pride" and will be rewarded for being a "genuine Roman".
