Sutton Football Club Fires Substitute Goalkeeper Over Sandwich Incident
Sutton Football Club, which plays in the fifth tier of English football, today dismissed substitute goalkeeper Wayne Shaw for eating a sandwich during the English Cup match against Arsenal.
"It is a very sad ending to a good story," said Sutton manager Paul Doswell, who indicated that the club asked the 45-year-old goalkeeper to resign.
"Wayne submitted his resignation to the president this afternoon, and it has been accepted," the coach added in statements to Sky News.
Shaw, a well-known goalkeeper weighing almost 150 kilograms, became the protagonist of the match played on Monday in the round of 16 of the Cup when he was shown on the bench eating while the game was still being played.
However, the player's behavior, which quickly went viral, raised suspicions from the British Gambling Commission, the regulatory body for betting in the country.
According to reports, the betting company Sun Bets, owned by the newspaper "The Sun," had offered an 8-1 payout for anyone who placed a bet that the goalkeeper would eat a sandwich "live on air" during the match.
"The club is very disappointed with his behavior from the 82nd minute onwards. We are very concerned about the consequences this may have for the club, for me, my assistant, and everyone who is part of the team," said Doswell.
"It is clear that the rules of the English Association do not allow betting. Whether it is for fun or whatever reason, it is unacceptable," the coach stated. "And I say this with much regret because he is a good friend of mine, but the board did not have any other choice."
Sutton hoped to advance to the quarterfinals of the English Cup, but a 2-0 defeat against Arsenal, with goals from Spanish players Lucas Perez and Theo Walcott, put an end to the fairy tale.
