Trofeo-less afternoon for Mexican and Spanish bullfighters
Mexican bullfighters Arturo Saldivar and Sergio Flores, as well as Spanish bullfighter Paco Ureña, left empty-handed during the 15th bullfight of the 2016-17 Season at the Monumental Plaza Mexico.
All three matadors fought bulls from Barralva on Sunday, which had uneven but good physical presence and a fairly acceptable performance overall.
The afternoon was opened by Paco Ureña with the bull named "No que no", weighing 528 kilograms, with which he delivered a complete performance full of talent, effort, and bravery, but unfortunately couldn't finish it off with the sword.
Ureña showcased a large part of his bullfighting skills with cape and muleta, in a measured and well-executed performance, against a noble and well-behaved bull that allowed him to shine at times. He spoiled it in the end with the sword and received ovations.
With his second bull, Ureña again impressed with another measured and controlled performance, however, this time the bull refused to assist him, leading his efforts to be lost in the indifference of the audience. He struggled with the sword and left amidst mixed opinions.
Meanwhile, Arturo Saldivar showed great determination and willingness in his pair of bulls; however, both opponents allowed for very little success when engaging with them, despite the matador from Jalisco's many attempts.
In his first turn, Saldivar achieved little with cape and muleta, resulting in some disapproving whistles at the end, while in his second performance, he made no impact and left in silence.
On the other hand, Sergio Flores, from Tlaxcala, also struggled with two bulls of different styles and charges, and despite his efforts to please the crowd, they were in vain against two opponents with little excitement and spirit.
In his first appearance, Flores left amidst silence and ended the afternoon with a slight ovation, after the effort and determination he displayed in the monumental arena of Insurgentes.
