Start a Healthy Life through Running
One of the most popular New Year's resolutions is to start a healthier life through sports. Becoming a runner and participating in various races throughout the year will not only help you lose those extra pounds, but it will also give your life a healthier and more disciplined rhythm.
But how do you start in the world of runners?
Who better to help you than Germán Silva, considered the best marathon runner in Mexico and an example to many runners.
In an interview with La Afición, the two-time winner of the New York Marathon shares his innovative training method, which is also available online and through a mobile application. This method is extremely useful and convenient for beginners in this sport.
"At the end of 2016, we introduced a very innovative application with personalized plans for runners of all levels and distances. I train runners in Mexico and abroad through this app. So, I no longer depend on my presence, because I train runners according to their abilities and training possibilities," said Germán.
Is it difficult to start a runner's life without any experience?
"It's not difficult, as long as you have good motivation, discipline, and access to a well-trained coach who supports, motivates, and helps you achieve your first goal (for example, your first 5 kilometers). For the marathon and half marathon, you should already have a minimum base of 10 months."
How long does it take to develop rhythm and discipline as a runner?
"Training with companions also helps. You should bear in mind that anything in life requires time to create a habit, and I think that after about three weeks, it becomes difficult to quit. The habit has been formed."
How did you start in this world?
"It all started when I saw some runners passing by my house and it motivated me to imitate them, playing as if I were a runner too. I became even more motivated when I watched the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and became passionate about representing my country someday in the Olympics."
What came next?
"With this goal in mind, I started training seriously in the late 1980s and looked for a team in Mexico City because I had been told that the best runners were there, training at high altitudes. I never lost focus and passion. I was aware that I had to prepare myself for three to four months for a specific competition and not compete before this important date."
What were your first competitions?
"Starting with the 3000-meter steeplechase and moving on to other distances, from 1500 to 10,000 meters, I eventually ran the marathon. Running on the track helped me become a good marathon runner. In addition to seeking out the competitions where the best runners raced, until I won them (in the US and Europe)."
What do you recommend for those who want to start running this year?
"I recommend finding a truly qualified coach and not just a good runner who wants to be a coach... because there are many of these, and I do not recommend it at all. If possible, join a team or club, or use a personalized app that provides you with the necessary information and experience, as well as well-dosed training. Have patience and you will see that after a few weeks, you have found a sport that you will hardly give up."
The 'German Silva App' can be found in the App and Google Store. On the website www.germansilva.mx, there is an online store where you can get it with the purchase of a plan, and there is also access to an online platform to stay in touch with Germán.
