Tony Romo throws first touchdown pass in 14 months as Cowboys rest starters

Tony Romo threw his first touchdown pass in nearly 14 months as the playoff-bound Dallas Cowboys played it safe in a 27-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

The Cowboys (13-3) had already secured the top seed in the conference and home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs when the Eagles (7-9) defeated the Giants on December 22. As a result, Dak Prescott only played two offensive series and Ezekiel Elliott watched from the sidelines.

Carson Wentz connected with Zach Ertz for two touchdown passes to help Philadelphia finish the season with back-to-back wins.

Prescott completed four of eight passes for 37 yards before giving way to Romo, who hadn't played in a regular season game since Thanksgiving Day 2015, when he suffered a second left collarbone fracture in less than three months.

Romo suffered a back injury in the third preseason game against Seattle prior to the start of the current season, which opened the door for Prescott to have one of the best years by a rookie quarterback in NFL history.

Romo finished with three completions on four attempts for 29 yards.

Mark Sanchez replaced Romo and threw two interceptions to Jordan Hicks in the second quarter.
