CDMX Commemorates Equal Treatment Day with Discussion on Homophobia, Racism, and Soccer

The Council to Prevent and Eliminate Discrimination (COPRED) commemorated Equal Treatment Day in CDMX with the panel discussion "CDMX-Berlin: Homophobia, Racism, and Soccer," where dialogue to combat this conflict in Mexican soccer took place.

This event included the participation of Patricia Mercado, Secretary of Government of Mexico City, and Jacqueline L'Hoits, President of COPRED. Among the topics, the "Eh, puto" chant was highlighted, which has caused controversy in the Mexican League (Liga MX) and in Mexican national team matches, where other Latin American countries have even adopted this trend in their stadiums.

The head of COPRED pointed out that they are seeking an alliance with organizations in Berlin, Germany, who have minimized discrimination in their soccer.

"The contact we have is with soccer organizations in Berlin, who have done very important exercises with soccer fan clubs, and they will share that experience in Mexico City to generate actions that have been successful," she said.

Regarding the support from the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) with CONAPRED, Jacqueline L'Hoits stated that it has not yet been obtained. "What we want is for the results of this discussion to be presented to the federation," she concluded.
