The Chip Kelly era starts successfully for the 49ers

Chip Kelly's tenure as coach of San Francisco started in a triumphant manner, and the 49ers did not allow any points from their opponent for the first time in a season opener to overwhelm the Los Angeles Rams in a 28-0 victory on Monday.

Carlos Hyde ran for 88 yards and two touchdowns, and San Francisco spoiled the Rams' first game since their move to Los Angeles.

Shaun Draughn also scored a rushing touchdown, while Blaine Gabbert threw a touchdown pass to Vance McDonald to help the 49ers convincingly win their first game under Kelly's leadership.

Los Angeles fans waited over 21 years to see a team from the city in the NFL again. They will have to wait at least another week to see if that team scores its first points.

Case Keenum threw for only 130 yards with two interceptions. Running back Todd Gurley was limited to 47 yards on 17 carries, and the Rams looked ineffective with only 10 first downs.

Frustration took hold of Aaron Donald, a member of the defensive line, who was ejected in the fourth quarter after making contact with an official.

San Francisco's backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick once again kneeled during the national anthem, along with his teammate Eric Reid, while other players raised a fist to protest what they perceive as racial and social injustices in the country.
