Both the Yankees and Mets seem to be all in on Juan Soto, but before he signs, wherever he signs, Evan Roberts has an idea for a trade between the two teams to shore up some other needs.
“I want everyone to take a deep breath right now, because a lot of times, when people have a Mets-Yankees trade, it’s usually very stupid – but this one has been vetted in my Mets text chat, which also includes a Yankees fan who wants to make this trade,” Evan said. “I propose this trade just for fun, and all the Mets fans wanted to do it in the chat, the Yankee fan wanted to do it in the chat, and even Tiki was like, that actually makes a lot of sense.”
Evan does this every Sunday with C-Mac on the Rico Brogna, but this one was something for the ages, even before the Mets signed Clay Holmes to be a starter late Friday night:
“The New York Mets have acquired Nestor Cortes from the New York Yankees; you guys got a deep rotation, you're probably going to trade him anyway,” Evan said. “In return, the New York Yankees get a blossoming young star, a left-handed bat for Yankee Stadium: Brett Baty. Brett Baty for Nestor Cortes.”
Seems to make sense on paper, as the Yankees get a third baseman (or second baseman) to plug in with Jazz Chisholm at the other spot, while they shed about $8 million of salary and clear a logjam of starters by dealing Cortes to the pitching-needy Mets.
“No lose there, love it!” Tiki said, as Evan explained how the Yankees are likely to trade Cortes anyway, and how the fit works. “Brett is not doing anything with the Mets, because he is blocked.”
“Yeah – I would not want Baty replacing Alonso; like, let’s say the Mets lost Pete Alonso and they said let's play Vientos at first base, Baty at third, I would not do that,” Evan said. “But if Baty’s around, my idea is have him DH’ing with Starling Marte, platooning them. But, I think Baty has an interest around the league, teams are intrigued by him because he's young, he's under team control, and he’s got really good potential.”
