Bahrain's Ruth Jebet Breaks World Record in Paris Meeting

Bahraini athlete Ruth Jebet, the recent Olympic champion in the 3,000m steeplechase in Rio, achieved a new success by breaking the world record at the Paris meeting with a time of 8:52.78.

Jebet lowered the previous world record by six seconds, which was set by Russian athlete Gunara Galkina in the Olympic final in Beijing 2008 with a time of 8:58.81.

Kenyan athlete Caroline Tuigong took the lead in the first mile (2:56.36), and Jebet was already in the lead by the second mile (5:54.16). Jebet crossed the finish line alone to complete the world record.

The two athletes who accompanied Jebet on the Olympic podium in Rio also finished in the same positions in this race: Hyvin Kiyeng, the world champion, with a time of 9:01.96, and American athlete Emma Coburn with a time of 9:10.19.
