Toronto Masters 1000: Djokovic wins his 30th title
Another celebration. The 30th victory in Masters 1000 tournaments, a record number in the circuit. Novak Djokovic seems unstoppable and yesterday he defeated Kei Nishikori by 6-3 and 7-5 in the Toronto final.
Despite a small slip in the second set, Djokovic was much more effective and solid than his opponent in a slow-paced final. The Serbian took control from the start and managed to react at the end to secure the victory in one hour and 22 minutes of action.
The world number one quickly made a difference in the first set after a shaky period from Nishikori. A 4-2 advantage with a break and a clear path towards a 6-3 lead. Everything seemed to go the same way in the second set, especially after another break by Djokovic. However, a lapse. Djokovic lost focus for a few minutes, allowed Nishikori to shine, and found himself in a tight spot: 4-5 and serving.
The Serbian made it clear that he knows how to handle complex situations. He raised his level, showed his best version, and delivered another blow with his return. With the serve back, after failing two match points with his backhand (one cross-court and one into the net), he sealed the story with a powerful shot down the middle. Game, set, match, and title for Djokovic.
In this way, the Serbian secured his seventh title of the year and the 66th of his career, 30 of them in Masters 1000 tournaments. Nishikori, on the other hand, once again fell at the final hurdle in this type of tournament, in his third final.
