The Red Sox have not made an official announcement, although the recovery process for the Dominican player has been tedious
The physical problems of Adalberto Mondesi have been persistent, and since the 2022 season, he has not set foot on the field. Everything indicates that the Dominican player will not see action for the remainder of the campaign.
Manager Alex Cora said this week that Mondesi will be put out of all baseball-related activities for 2023 due to persistent knee pain, according to Chris Cotillo's report from MassLive.
These latest statements contradict what initially emerged during the week, suggesting that the Dominican shortstop might see action at some point in the season. Mondesi has only been able to play 100 games once in his entire career, and when he has been healthy, he has been relatively productive, with 2018 being his best season to date.
At the beginning of 2023, in a "low-risk, high-reward" move, the Boston Red Sox made a trade and acquired the shortstop, who has not played in the Major Leagues since the start of last season.
But everything indicates that the transaction, confirmed last January when the Red Sox sent Josh Taylor to the Kansas City Royals and received Angel Pierre, a minor league player, along with Mondesi, did not turn out as expected, and the Dominican shortstop will become a free agent at the end of the season.
"He has been inconsistent. He started his baseball activities again. He didn't feel very well, so we had to shut him down for the rest of the season," Cora said in statements reported by MassLive.
"He is just receiving treatment. It's been that battle of how he feels and where he's at. We've done everything possible to get it right. He's done everything possible to get it right. It's just a matter of clearing that last hurdle, and we haven't been able to do it."
Cora said Mondesi has been shut down again after not feeling great trying to ramp up.

Mondesi suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in April 2022 and has not been able to play in a Major League game since then.
