Dominican player remains out of action since April 2022, despite being traded to a new team, due to delays in his recovery.
Adalberto Mondesí was a few years ago one of the most promising prospects in Major League Baseball. The Dominican, who in 2015 was the 33rd prospect in all of baseball, became the first player of the "Modern Era" (from 1903 onwards) to debut in a World Series and won a championship ring with the Kansas City Royals. Since then, his career has been completely derailed due to injuries.
Mondesí has only played 100 games once in his entire career, and when he has been healthy, he has been relatively productive, with 2018 being his best season so far. At the beginning of 2023, in a "low risk, high reward" move, the Boston Red Sox made a trade and acquired the shortstop, who has not played in the Major Leagues since the start of last season.
The idea was simple, if he was healthy after knee surgery, Mondesí would take care of shortstop duties until Trevor Story, the team's starting shortstop, returned to action after an elbow operation. Things haven't gone as planned for Boston and after multiple delays in his rehabilitation, the team decided to halt all baseball activities.
Despite how far the season has progressed and the fact that the Boston team's middle infield is currently full, the possibility of Mondesí playing in 2023 has not been ruled out, according to a report by Chris Cotillo of masslive.com.
For the first time in months, the shortstop is making progress in his rehabilitation. According to Cotillo, the Dominican has been seen running and taking ground balls, while there is a possibility that he will soon face pitchers as part of his recovery process. This suggests that it would not be a surprise if the Dominican manages to see action in the last few weeks of the 2023 season.
Mondesí, who is training at the team's facilities in Fort Myers, Florida, could bring versatility to the Red Sox bench, being a switch-hitter with great speed on the bases, two things that the team currently lacks, especially in the speed department, where they only have one player with double-digit stolen bases, in a year where there has been a significant increase in stolen base attempts.
The Dominican could become a difference-maker for the end of the season, if and only if he can finally overcome the injury issues that have plagued his career.
