Former Raiders player Henry Ruggs sentenced to at least three years in prison for fatal car accident
Henry Ruggs, former player of the Las Vegas Raiders, was sentenced on Wednesday to at least three years in a Nevada state prison for killing a woman in a car accident that occurred on a street in this city almost two years ago.
"I sincerely apologize", said the player, chosen in the first round of the draft, as he stood to hear his sentence in Las Vegas.
In May, he pleaded guilty to a felony charge of driving under the influence of alcohol at 156 miles per hour (250 kilometers). The athlete also accepted his guilt for a misdemeanor charge of causing a death with a vehicle, which carries a six-month prison sentence and will be added to his sentence of three to ten years.
Ruggs, who is now 24 years old, was released by the Raiders while he was hospitalized as a result of the collision and fire that occurred early in the morning on November 2, 2021. The accident killed Tina Tintor and her dog Max, and injured Kiara Je'nai Kilgo-Washington, who was in the car with Ruggs and is the mother of his daughter.
"I have no excuses", said Ruggs, mentioning the pain that the case has caused his company, his teammates, and the loved ones of Tintor.
The player stated that when he is released from prison, he will try to advise others "about the dangers of driving at unsafe speeds and driving while intoxicated".
A statement read by David Strbac, Tintor's cousin, included quotes from Mirjana Komazec, the young woman's mother. The woman expressed her regret and recalled "what it was like to hug her daughter".
"We know that we will never be able to kiss her on the forehead to tell her how much we love her and how incredibly proud we are of her," she added.
"We pray that Henry Ruggs is blessed with the opportunity to see his daughter grow up to become the amazing woman she can be," added Komazec's statement. "And we pray that this terrible accident inspires positive change in the world. We pray that we can all understand the importance of taking care of each other, remembering that every person is someone else's loved one".
