The surprising Botafogo, leader of the Brazilian league, qualified for the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana by drawing 1-1 with the Argentine Patronato this Wednesday in Rio de Janeiro.
In the debut of Portuguese coach Bruno Lage, replacing fellow Portuguese Luís Castro, now at Saudi Al Nassr of Cristiano Ronaldo, the 'Fogão' took the lead at the Nilton Santos Olympic Stadium with a goal from winger Luis Henrique (3).
The 'Patrón', from the Argentine second division, equalized through midfielder Damián Arce (67), but the goal was not enough to level the series, after suffering a 2-0 defeat in the first leg last week.
Botafogo, which fielded mixed lineups in both matches, will play for a place in the quarterfinals in August against Guaraní from Paraguay, who qualified directly to the round of 16 as the leader of Group B in the Sudamericana.
