Independence Day in the United States: origin and how citizens celebrate it

July 4th is the celebration in the United States that commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, when the country separated from the British Empire. Originally, independence was achieved in thirteen colonies, including Massachusetts, New York, Virginia, and North Carolina, among others. The colonists rebelled against the high taxes imposed by the British Parliament and organized themselves in the First Continental Congress in 1774.
