AMSTERDAM — The Hudson Falls Tigers got off to a quick start with Dalton Hogan scoring less than two minutes into Thursday’s Foothills Council boys’ lacrosse match against Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth.
The Rams answered Hogan’s score and a second Hudson Falls score from Reid Horrigan with a pair of Nick Santiago tallies to spark a 5-2 victory over the Tigers at Amsterdam’s Lynch Literacy Field.
The Rams’ victory led to a rousing postgame celebration and a “Happy Birthday” serenade by the team for coach James Natole.
“I’ll take it. I can’t complain,” Natole said.
The Rams also added the gift of a second-half shutout en route to their second win of the season.
“I am really proud of my defense and my coaching staff. They make our family run and support us every time we need them,” Natole said. “I feel like I am complimenting our goalie [Cody Hamm] every day, and I am loving doing that, he played great. We played solid defense. They are young, but very good players.”
Hamm made eight saves in the match, seven of which came in the first half.
Hamm’s effort backed up a three-goal performance from Santiago, while Santino Carbone and Jack Samek added a goal and an assist apiece.
“We are very young offensively,” Natole said. “We have been working hard, so when we do things correctly, we see the bright spots and see the success from it. Being consistent with that is really important for us going forward. At the start of the season, our attack had 11 games of JV experience. They are getting better at the throwing as we go. As long as we are making progress, I am happy.”
Hudson Falls (0-4) got on the board early with Hogan finishing off an assist from Caleb Hasting. Santiago tied the match up with his first goal of the match off an assist from Carbone late in the opening quarter.
Horrigan put the Tigers back in front off an assist from Hogan with 4:23 left in the opening half.
The Rams again responded with Santiago scoring his second goal of the half before Jack Samek gave the Rams the lead with 18 seconds left in the half with his score off a long outlet from Hamm.
Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth dominated play in the second half, with the defense quickly shutting down the Hudson Falls runs and allowing the offense to tack on goals from Carbone and Santiago to close out its first league win of the season.
The Rams (1-2 Foothills, 2-2 overall) will look to keep the momentum on their side as they face a tough schedule with a non-league game against Averill Park before taking on league rivals South Glens Falls and Glens Falls in a span of four days next week.
“I would like to change that,” Natole said of his team starting the season with a loss, win, loss, win pattern. “I would like to make it win, win, win, but we have tough games this Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. We are going to be going into a week of hard work.”
