Cruz is the winner of $4 million from the ticket sold in Fontana. He said he had a feeling of luck when he made that purchase in January. He had five of the six winning numbers for a prize of $3,987,249. One more matching number and he would have claimed the astonishing amount of the multi-state jackpot of $613 million. However, he considers what he won to be pretty good.

Misael Cruz told lottery officials that he believes he won because he helps a lot of people selflessly and the prize has been his reward.

“I know exactly why I won... I help a lot of people and never expect anything in return. That's what I teach my children. I know I was rewarded for helping,” said the lucky winner.

Cruz said he regularly buys lottery tickets but he felt lucky that day.

“I had a feeling (of luck) the day I bought my tickets,” he said. “The employee wished me good luck. As I was leaving through the door, I said to myself, 'what if I win?’”. And so it happened.

WHAT WILL HE DO WITH THE $4 MILLION FROM POWERBALL?

Misael Cruz clarified that the $4 million prize will not change him as a person and he will maintain his simple lifestyle.

“I will continue to help people. I will invest a little, but this money will not change me as a person. I will keep buying the cheapest prices,” he said.

Cruz was also lucky to have bought the ticket in California. In most other states, a ticket with 5 out of 6 numbers is worth a fixed amount of $1 million or $2 million, but California law requires that significant payments from lottery games be paid on a mutual or proportional basis to the number of tickets sold.

The odds of matching all five numbers and the Powerball number are about 1 in 293 million, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association, which runs the game. The overall probability of winning a prize is 1 in 24.87.
