The coach of the Kansas City Chiefs, Andy Reid, stated on Monday that the ankle sprain suffered by Patrick Mahomes, their quarterback, will not prevent him from playing in the American Conference (AFC) final against the Cincinnati Bengals.

"He's a tough guy, the sprain he suffered in the upper part of his ankle is not that bad, he's fine and will play on Sunday against the Bengals," affirmed Reid in the press conference.

In the Divisional Round game last Saturday, in which the Chiefs defeated the Jaguars 27-20, Mahomes left the game in the first half after a play in which a Jacksonville defensive player fell on his right ankle.

Despite the pain, the quarterback returned in the second half with his ankle bandaged and although he didn't have his usual mobility, he managed to lead the Chiefs to the AFC title game next Sunday against the Bengals.

This Monday, the champion of Super Bowl LIV underwent a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) that revealed a sprain in the upper part of his right ankle, as reported by Andy Reid.

"The injury is not as bad as the one he suffered in 2019. Patrick is receiving treatment and taking it day by day, but as I said, he's a very tough guy," reiterated the coach.

Reid referred to the sprain Mahomes suffered in week seven of the 2019 season, which kept him out of action for three weeks.

Under the leadership of Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City has reached the AFC championship game in five consecutive seasons, including this year's game against Cincinnati.

They lost in 2019 to the New England Patriots and in 2022 against the Bengals, their upcoming opponent. They won in 2020 against the Tennessee Titans and in 2021 against the Buffalo Bills.

If Mahomes' injury doesn't allow him to play against the Bengals, Chad Henne, the Chiefs' backup quarterback, would be in charge.
