The defending player of the Buffalo Bills, Damar Hamlin, who suffered a cardiac arrest during an NFL match this week, showed "signs of improvement" but remained sedated in critical condition.

The 24-year-old defensive back collapsed on Monday night after receiving a strong blow to the chest while tackling Cincinnati wide receiver Tee Higgins during the first quarter of the Bills' away game.

The emergency team managed to restore Hamlin's heartbeats on the field and the player was transported from the stadium to a hospital in an ambulance, while the game was stopped with the Bills trailing 7-3.

"Damar remains in the ICU (intensive care unit) in critical condition with signs of improvement noticed yesterday and overnight," the Bills said in a statement on Wednesday.

"He is expected to remain in intensive care while his medical team continues to monitor and treat him," the team added.

Jordon Rooney, a friend and marketing representative of Damar Hamlin, provided a medical update this Wednesday.

"Right now, things are moving in a positive direction," Rooney told NFL Network.

Rooney questioned the claim by Hamlin's uncle, Dorrian Glenn, that Hamlin was revived at the hospital and on the field.

He also said that Hamlin's family was not happy to see criticism towards Higgins for the hit that hospitalized Hamlin.

"That was a regular football play," Rooney said. "The family doesn't want any rejection towards Tee at all."

NFL players returned to training this Wednesday ahead of the final weekend of the regular season, where the Bills were scheduled to host New England on Sunday.

Fans gathered outside the local stadium of the Buffalo Bills for a prayer vigil for Hamlin.

The NFL said that the Bills-Bengals game, which would have an impact on the playoff seedings, will not be completed this week and did not commit to setting a date to complete the game.

With a scheduled bye week before the conference playoffs and next month's Super Bowl, the NFL could delay the planned postseason games by one week each to finish the Bills-Bengals game next week. AFP
