Six victories for Orlando before visiting Atlanta last night and they did not add the seventh by a hair. To be exact, it was two free throws by Dejounte Murray that put the final 126-125 to leave them with a bitter taste.
It was an entertaining game, one with a team full of confidence and another that has the talent and maturity to have a great season; although the second did not show up too much at the State Farme Arena. Why do we say that? Well, because the Hawks were on the verge of losing a game they almost literally had in the bag.
After dominating the scoreboard for almost the entire night, Nate McMillan's boys entered the last three minutes of the game leading by 12 points. They had it in their hands, but right there the light went out for them to the point of receiving a 13-0 run that Markelle Fultz finished off to put Orlando one point ahead with three seconds to play. Luckily for Georgia's team, on the next attack the referees called a foul on Murray and he didn't miss from the free-throw line. They breathed a sigh of relief, but they got a good scare.
"We have to grow, starting with me. We have to show what we're playing for. These kinds of games show that we are not playing to win, make the playoffs, and be a team that makes noise. We have to stop being comfortable. We almost lost the game," says Murray.
Before everything got inexplicably complicated, Trae Young had been the best of his team by completing a performance of 37 points and 13 assists. His good work was joined by the return of John Collins (like Dejounte Murray) who scored 12 points and grabbed 7 rebounds in 20 minutes.
Orlando, with high morale
Losing a game is not a problem. That is the premise defended by the Florida team after falling in Atlanta and seeing their streak of six consecutive victories come to an end. Moritz Wagner, who signed a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, confirms it.
"Results matter, but the process is much more than that, so I think we are encouraged by what we did in that final quarter and the fight we showed. That's the mentality we should have. If you're a good team, you also get up after losses and keep fighting no matter what happens. I think this defines our state of mind."
The leading scorer for the Magic was Markelle Fultz, who was excellent with 24 points (11 of 19 shooting), nine assists, and six rebounds. Franz Wagner finished with 19 points and Paolo Banchero contributed 18.
