Netflix premiered the series "Own Goals" on Wednesday, November 2nd

that recreates moments from the life of Andrés Escobar, who was murdered after his participation in the 1994 United States World Cup. However, the broadcast of the audiovisual content has upset the family of the former defender.

Santiago Escobar, brother of the 'Gentleman', expressed his indignation against the streaming platform, mentioning that the people close to the former player were not aware of the filming of the episodes. Furthermore, he indicated that they were not consulted either.

"On behalf of the family, I want to express that I am extremely indignant, just like my entire family, because the people from Netflix did not have the delicacy to involve us or at least ask us or let us know that they were going to make a series about Andrés," he stated in an audio collected by El Tiempo.

Similarly, he pointed out that the content only aims to "sell and commercialize the image" of his brother. "This is a lack of respect for Andrés and for all of them who were so great to be included in such a disgusting and perverse series," he added.

On the other hand, Santiago explained that he is considering taking legal action against the streaming platform. "I am talking to a lawyer, and on behalf of the family, we want to sue the people from Netflix", he explained.

Who was Andrés Escobar?

Andrés Escobar Saldarriaga, known in the world of soccer as the 'Gentleman,' was born in 1967 in Medellín, and from school, he showed signs that his passion was soccer. He made his professional debut in 1986, playing for Atlético Nacional, and from 1988 he was part of the Colombian national team, with which he participated in the qualifiers for the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

Considered one of the great defenders of his time, Escobar was called up by Colombia to go to the 1994 World Cup in the United States, where he would start in all three matches for the 'Cafeteros'. Unfortunately, the 'Gentleman' scored an own goal that would seal the fate of his country in the group stage and, with it, his life.

Upon returning to Colombia, the footballer continued with his normal life until he had a verbal encounter with two men linked to paramilitarism and drug trafficking, who ordered his death. Several journalism programs have talked about this unfortunate event that marked the country in the 90s.
