Atletico Madrid received the highest offer in the history of football for a defender.
The Spanish press details that a juicy proposal arrived at the offices of the Spanish institution from the Premier League.
The newspaper As indicates that Manchester City offered Atletico Madrid the impressive amount of 89 million euros for the Uruguayan Jose Maria Gimenez, however, the Madrid capital club decided to reject it.
The team directed by Pep Guardiola set their sights on the Uruguayan defender after failing to sign the Frenchman Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga.
Even the offer from Manchester City for Josema Gimenez could have reached 94 million euros in bonuses for objectives, but Atletico Madrid considers the Uruguayan as a key piece in the defensive block of Diego Pablo Simeone's formation.
Gimenez can only leave if a club pays the 120 million euros stipulated in the player's contract as a release clause. This amount is currently impossible for the Citizens to pay.
It is worth remembering that the most expensive defender in history is Harry Maguire. In 2019, the Englishman moved from Leicester City to Manchester United in exchange for 87 million euros.
