The German Football Federation (DFB) announced on Wednesday that it will not penalize the tributes to George Floyd, the African-American citizen who died violently at the hands of a white police officer, made by several football players last weekend in the Bundesliga matches.

"The federation expects to maintain this position in the upcoming matches, even in the event of new anti-racist actions due to the violent death of George Floyd," added the DFB.

"I expressly celebrate the clear decision of the DFB control commission and I am very happy," said DFB President Fritz Keller in a statement, stating that "the actions of the players have our respect and understanding."

Weston McKennie (Schalke 04), Jadon Sancho, and Achraf Hakimi (both from Borussia Dortmund) expressed their outrage after the death of George Floyd by wearing an armband in the case of McKennie and revealing messages on their shirts in the case of the other two.

The anger unleashed in the United States after the death on May 25 in Minneapolis of Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, at the hands of a white police officer, has sparked a wave of protests and riots throughout the country.
