The South American Football Confederation (Conmebol) announced this Thursday that it disbursed a total of 14 million dollars to its ten member associations as part of a development program to minimize the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in the southern region of the continent.

Financial aid approved by CONMEBOL

The financial aid was approved by the members of the Council in the remote meeting held on April 17th, and the transfers to the associations were recently made, the organization reported in a statement.

The report states that the amount "may be used for payment of salaries or any other initiative aimed at promoting the development of South American football and mitigating the economic consequences of the interruption of the sports calendar."

"We have been as agile as possible in the procedures so that (the associations) can have access to this important investment as soon as possible, which will help them face the financial needs of the coming months," said CONMEBOL's Development Director, Gonzalo Belloso.

At the club level, CONMEBOL has already made available a fund of 65 million dollars to the participating teams of the suspended Libertadores and Sudamericana cups as an advance payment for participation rights.

These tournaments were temporarily suspended due to the outbreak of the coronavirus, and as a preventive measure, the ball also stopped rolling in the ten associated countries.
