The players of AS Roma and their coach Paulo Fonseca resign from four months of salary

The Italian capital club announced on Sunday that the players of AS Roma and their coach Paulo Fonseca have resigned from four months of salary, hit by the economic consequences of the coronavirus crisis.

According to the statement from the Italian club, the players will not receive their benefits for the months of March, April, May, and June.

If Serie A, interrupted since March 9, were resumed, the club, coaching staff, and players reached an agreement on a bonus system based on achieved sporting objectives.

The players and coaching staff also agreed to pay out of their pockets the difference between what the club's partially unemployed employees currently receive and their normal salary.

"Captain Edin Dzeko, all the players, and Paulo have shown that they truly understand what this club means, and we also thank them for their magnificent gesture in favor of our employees," reacted Guido Fienga, CEO of Roma.

Among the Serie A clubs, Juventus and Parma had already announced salary reduction agreements, a principle approved by all the clubs during a general league assembly.

The Italian Federation reiterated on Friday its desire to resume the season "at the end of May, beginning of June." (D)
