Italian Serie A clubs approve wage cuts due to pandemic

The decision was unanimously approved by the presidents of Serie A clubs at Monday's meeting and was necessary "to save the future of the country's football system," which is facing losses that could reach one billion euros, Serie A League reported in an official statement.

"The losses will have to be contained with a reduction in expenses, with the main burden for clubs being represented by player salaries. The Serie A League unanimously approved a common line on Monday, except for Juventus who has already reached an agreement with their players, to contain the impact on players', coaches', and managers' wages," the official statement said.

"A reduction of one-third of the total gross annual salary, or four months, is planned in the case that sporting activities cannot be resumed, and a reduction of one-sixth of the total annual salary if the remaining matches of the 2019-2020 season can be played in the coming months," it added.

"Clubs will directly define agreements with their players," concludes the lengthy note from Serie A League, chaired by Paolo Dal Pino.

This decision does not affect Juventus Turin, which was the first club to reach a private agreement with its squad two weeks ago, not to pay salaries for the months of March, April, May, and June.

Serie A League also reiterated its intention to finish the current season, which was interrupted on March 9th during matchday 26, due to the coronavirus outbreak that has already caused more than 15,000 deaths in the country.
