"I don't think we will be able to talk about playing matches in April. Not even behind closed doors because they have the potential for people to gather in their homes to watch them,"
It is the opinion of German virologist Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit, from the Berhard-Nocht Institute in Hamburg, who believes that the break in football competitions will have to be extended until 2021 due to the new coronavirus pandemic.
The German Football League (DFL) proposed last Monday to suspend the Bundesliga and the 2.Bundesliga at least until April 2.
If the health situation allows it, the DFL would prioritize the solution of playing matches behind closed doors to save the television rights on which professional clubs depend for their survival.
The virologist, on the other hand, does not believe that the season can be concluded in the coming months.
"I am convinced that we will only be able to play again next year. I do not think it is realistic to think that this season can be finished," said Schmidt-Chanasit in an interview with the North German Television (NRD), as reported by the Spanish newspaper Marca. (D)
