The only goal of the match on Wednesday was scored by Serbian Nemanja Matic (minute 35) for the 'Red Devils', who took advantage of a rebound in the area to beat Chilean goalkeeper Claudio Bravo with a powerful low shot.
Matic was later sent off in the 76th minute with a second yellow card.
As there is no higher value for away goals in case of a tied elimination, United fell just one goal short of leveling the semifinal.
City, on the other hand, repeatedly ran into Spanish goalkeeper David De Gea, who was particularly a nightmare for Argentine Sergio Agüero, who even had a goal disallowed in the 83rd minute for offside.
This will be Manchester City's fourth appearance in the last five 'EFL Cup' finals, a tournament they have won six times, including the last two in 2018 and 2019.
