German Sebastian Vettel (Ferrari) made use of a successful strategy to conquer his first race in 23 races, and the first in 2019, in front of his teammate Charles Leclerc, who had started from pole position.
Max Verstappen (Red Bull) from the Netherlands completed the podium of the 15th race out of 21 this season, at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) from the United Kingdom, the leader of the championship, was fourth, ahead of his Finnish teammate Valtteri Bottas.
But Hamilton extended his lead at the top of the championship from 63 to 65 points over his closest rival, Bottas.
For Ferrari, who had to wait for the previous two Grands Prix in Belgium and Italy to achieve their first two victories in 2019, this is their first one-two finish since the 2017 Hungarian Grand Prix.
This return to the top for the 'Cavallino Rampante' team is even more unexpected because the Asian circuit did not favor the characteristics of their cars.
In a track where overtaking is difficult, Leclerc did not expect to see his teammate, who started from third place, take the lead by going to the pits one lap earlier than him, following a last minute instruction from the Scuderia, clarified Vettel.
"I don't understand it (that strategy). We will have to discuss it after the race. I think it's unfair," the Monegasque driver stated on the radio during the Grand Prix, before being more cautious once he got out of his car.
The other affected driver by that choice was Hamilton, who stayed on track as long as possible to maintain his second place on the grid, although he eventually lost two positions when he entered the pits.
Thai driver Alexander Albon (Red Bull), British driver Lando Norris (McLaren), French driver Pierre Gasly (Toro Rosso), German driver Nico Hülkenberg (Renault) and Italian driver Antonio Giovinazzi (Alfa Romeo Racing) complete the top 10.
The race could not be finished by Finnish driver Kimi Raikkonen (Alfa Romeo Racing) and British driver George Russell (Williams), as well as Mexican driver Sergio Pérez (Racing Point), who suffered a breakdown.
