French driver Anthoine Hubert dies in Formula 2 crash at Spa

Anthoine Hubert, from the Arden team, died on Saturday after a tremendous accident during the first race of Formula 2 at the Spa circuit in Belgium.

The International Automobile Federation (FIA) confirmed the fatal incident in a statement, which involved cars 12, 19, and 20. Hubert passed away at 18:15 local time.

The 22-year-old Frenchman was hit at high speed by the car of American-Ecuadorian driver Juan Manuel Correa at the Raidillon corner, after going off track and hitting the right-side barriers.

Medical services at the Belgian circuit quickly arrived at the accident scene, and the involved drivers were transported to the medical center.

"Hubert succumbed to his injuries and passed away at 18:35," the FIA stated.

"Juan Manuel Correa is in stable condition and receiving treatment at the CHU Hospital in Liege. Further information about his condition will be provided when available," the FIA's statement added.

Giuliano Alesi also went to the medical center, but, according to this source, he does not suffer major injuries. EFE
